All throughout my teaching career I have implemented strategies for initiating and sustaining technology innovations in my classroom, as well as sharing these ideas with my colleagues. I would like to highlight one opportunity in particular.
Always searching for opportunities to challenge my students and incorporate real-life scenarios drew me to a aviation training in Seattle. I had to invite my teammates. At the training, we were introduced to the concept of aviation and how it relates to math, science, and engineering and design. It was perfect- it brought ratios alive! A much needed real-word math implication.
This training changed our life! In my blog, Design Thinking, I show how the program works. We developed a full fledged Aviation program to accompany our math and literacy unit (We read Dragon Wings by Lawrence Yep), complete with a 6th grade school competition. It is now in its 5th year and I am looking forward to introducing this program to more schools in the coming year, to see if we could take this program district-wide.
